Sunan Ibn Majah 1451 (Book 6, Hadith 19) #30803
Grieving for Relatives

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised not to grieve for a relative who is in the throes of death, as it is part of their merits.

It was narrated from 'Aishah that the Messenger of Allah entered upon her and there was a close relative of hers who was in the throes of death. When the Prophet saw how upset she was, he said: "Do not grieve for your relative, for that is part of his Hasanat (merits)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion towards those who are grieving; Offer words of comfort whenever possible; Remember that grief can be expressed in different ways other than tears or sadness; Pray and remember those who have passed away.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was visiting 'Aishah when he noticed that she was upset due to a close relative who was in the throes of death. He then comforted her by saying that grieving for them is part of their merits, or al-hasanat. This hadith teaches us that we should not be too sad when someone passes away, as it is part of Allah's plan and they will receive rewards from Him. We should also remember that grief can be expressed in different ways and does not necessarily have to be through tears or sadness; rather, we can express our grief through prayer and remembrance. Additionally, this hadith reminds us to always show compassion towards those who are grieving and offer words of comfort whenever possible.
