Sunan Ibn Majah 1417 (Book 5, Hadith 615) #30769
The Calming Tree Trunk

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to stand by a tree trunk and it made a grieving sound. He then rubbed it and it calmed down, with some people saying that if he had not come to it, the tree trunk would have grieved until the Day of Resurrection.

It was narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said: "The Messenger of Allah used to stand by the root of a tree, or by a tree trunk, then he started to use a pulpit. The tree trunk made a grieving sound". Jabir said: "So that the people in the mosque could hear it. Until the Messenger of Allah came to it and rubbed it, and it calmed down. Some of them said: 'If he had not come to it, it would have grieved until the Day of Resurrection.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about an incident involving the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and a tree trunk. It is narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said that when the Prophet ﷺ used to give sermons in the mosque, he would stand by a tree trunk which made a grieving sound. When he came near it, he would rub it gently and this action calmed down the tree trunk. Some people said that if he had not come to do this, then the tree trunk would have kept on making its grieving sound until Judgment Day. This incident teaches us several values such as kindness towards all living things even those which are nonliving like trees; respect for nature; gentleness; patience; mercy etc. It also shows us how much love and respect people had for their beloved Prophet ﷺ as they believed that his presence alone was enough to calm down something like a tree trunk!
