Sunan Ibn Majah 1345 (Book 5, Hadith 543) #30697
Dividing Up The Quran and Experiences With Quraish

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) coming to the delegation of Thaqif and speaking to them about his experiences with the Quraish. He also talks about how he used to divide up his daily portion of Quran.

It was narrated from 'Uthman bin 'Abdullah bin Aws that his grandfather Aws bin Hudhaifah said: "We came to the Messenger of Allah in the delegation of Thaqif. The allies of Quraish stayed at the house of Mughirah bin Shu’bah, and the Messenger of Allah camped Bani Malik in a tent belonging to him. He used to come to us every night after the 'Isha’ and speak to us standing on his two feet, until he started to shift his weight from one foot to the other. Most of what he told us was what he had suffered from his people, the Quraish. He said: '(The two sides) were not equal. We were weak and oppressed and humiliated, and when we went out to Al-Madinah, the outcome of the battles between us varied; sometimes we would defeat them and sometimes they would defeat us.’ One night he was later than he usually was, and I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you have come to us late tonight.’ He said: 'It occurred to me that I had not read my daily portion of Qur’an and I did not want to come out until I had completed it.’" Aws said: "I asked the Companions of the Messenger of Allah : 'How did you used to divide up the Qur’an?’ They said: 'A third, a fifth, a seventh, a ninth, an eleventh, a thirteenth, and Hizbul-Mufassal.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ experiences with the Quraish and how he used to divide up his daily portion of Quran. He was part of a delegation from Thaqif, who stayed at Mughirah bin Shubah's house while he camped in a tent belonging to him. Every night after Isha prayer, he would come out and talk standing on both feet until he started shifting weight from one foot to another. Most of what he told them were stories about what happened between him and the Quraish people, which were not equal as they were weak and oppressed while they went out for battles against each other which sometimes resulted in victory or defeat for either side. One night when he came late than usual, it was because it occurred to him that he hadn't read his daily portion of Quran yet so wanted to finish it before coming out again. When asked by Aws how did you used divide up your daily portion of Quran? The companions replied that they would do a third, fifth, seventh ninth eleventh thirteenth or Hizbul-Mufassal every day respectively . This hadith teaches us that we should always prioritize our religious duties over worldly matters no matter how busy we are in our lives as this will help us stay connected with Allah SWT . We should also be patient during difficult times like Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did when facing oppression from people around him instead of giving into despair or anger .
