Sunan Ibn Majah 989 (Book 5, Hadith 187) #30341
Consideration for Mothers in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) shortened his prayer when he heard an infant crying, out of consideration for the distress it caused to the mother.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'I start prayer and I want to make it long, but then I hear an infant crying, so I make my prayer short, because I know the distress caused to the mother by his crying.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Be considerate and compassionate towards others especially mothers who are caring for their children.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Anas bin Malik speaks of the Prophet Muhammad's consideration and compassion towards mothers. When he was in prayer, if he heard an infant crying, he would shorten his prayer out of understanding for the distress that it caused to its mother. This teaches us that we should be considerate and compassionate towards others, especially mothers who are caring for their children. We should also remember that Allah is merciful and understanding; He will forgive us if we make mistakes or are unable to fulfill our obligations due to circumstances beyond our control.
