How Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Performed Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the prayer of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and how he used to perform it.

It was narrated that Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Ata’ said, concerning Abu Humaid As-Sa'di: "I heard him when he was among ten of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah , one of whom was Abu Qatadah bin Rib'i, saying: 'I am the most knowledgeable of you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah . When he stood up for prayer, he stood up straight and raised his hands until they were parallel to his shoulders, then he said: Allahu Akbar. When he wanted to bow in Ruku', he raised his hands until they were parallel to his shoulders. When he said Sami' Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him), he raised his hands and stood up straight. When he stood up after two Rak'ah, he said Allahu Akbar and raised his hands until they were parallel to his shoulders, as he did when he started the prayer.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates how the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, used to perform his prayers. He would stand up straight and raise his hands until they were parallel to his shoulders while saying "Allahu Akbar". When he wanted to bow in Ruku', he raised his hands until they were parallel to his shoulders again. After two Rak'ah, he said "Allahu Akbar" and raised his hands until they were parallel to his shoulders again as when he started the prayer. He also said "Sami' Allahu liman hamidah" while raising his hands and standing up straight after each two Rak'ah. This hadith teaches us that we should follow the example of our beloved Prophet in our prayers by standing up straight, raising our hands when we say "Allahu Akbar", bowing in Ruku', prostrating during Sujud, and praising Allah with words like "Sami' Allahu liman hamidah".
