Sunan Ibn Majah 805 (Book 5, Hadith 3) #30157
Seeking Forgiveness and Purification from Sins

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) taught us to ask Allah for forgiveness and purification from our sins.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "When the Messenger of Allah said the Takbir (Allah Akbar), he would remain silent between the Takbir and the recitation. I said: 'May my father and mother be ransomed for you! I noticed that you are silent between the Takbir and the recitation; please tell me what you say then.’ He said: 'I say: 'Allahumma ba’id baini wa baina khatayaya kama ba’adta bainal-mashriqi wal-maghrib; Allahumma naqqini min khatayay kath-thawbil abyad minad- danas; Allahummaghsilni min khatayaya bil-ma’i waththalji wal-barad (O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the east from the west; O Allah purify me of my sins as a white garment is purified of dirt; O Allah, cleanse me of my sins with water and snow and hail)".

Ask Allah for forgiveness & purification from your sins .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Abu Hurairah who was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaches us to ask Allah for forgiveness and purification from our sins. He said that when he recites the Takbir or “Allah Akbar” he remains silent between it and his recitation. When asked what he says during this time, he replied with a supplication asking Allah to distance him from his sins as much as east is distant from west; asking Him to purify him of his sins like a white garment is purified of dirt; and asking Him to cleanse him of his sins with water, snow and hail. This hadith teaches us that we should always seek forgiveness from Allah for our wrongdoings in order to be purified in His sight. We should also strive to make sincere repentance so that we can be forgiven by Him.
