Sunan Ibn Majah 784 (Book 4, Hadith 50) #30136
The Reward of Footsteps

SUMMARY: The Prophet encouraged Banu Salimah to stay in their homes and not move away from the outskirts of Al-madinah, as they would be rewarded for their footsteps.

It was narrated that Anas said: "Banu Salimah wanted to move from their homes to somewhere near the mosque, but the Prophet did not want the outskirts of Al-madinah to be left vacant, so he said: 'O Banu Salimah, do you not hope for the reward of your footsteps?' So they stayed (where they were)".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of staying in one's home and not moving away from it. It was narrated by Anas ibn Malik that Banu Salimah wanted to move from their homes to somewhere near the mosque but the Prophet did not want the outskirts of Al-madinah to be left vacant. He encouraged them by saying "O Banu Salimah, do you not hope for the reward of your footsteps?" This means that even if they stayed where they were instead of moving away from it, they would still be rewarded for their efforts. This hadith teaches us that we should stay in our homes and take care of them as we will be rewarded for our efforts no matter what we do. We should also strive to make our surroundings better so that everyone can benefit from it.
