Leading Prayers with Knowledge

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised that the most knowledgeable person in the Quran should lead the prayer and the best of people should give the call to prayer.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Let the best of you give the call to prayer (Adhan), and let those who are most versed in the Qur'an lead you in prayer'."
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عِيسَى، أَخُو سُلَيْمٍ الْقَارِي عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ أَبَانَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ لِيُؤَذِّنْ لَكُمْ خِيَارُكُمْ وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمْ قُرَّاؤُكُمْ

This hadith is about how to lead prayers in a mosque. The Prophet Muhammad PBUH advised that those who are most knowledgeable in reciting and understanding the Quran should be chosen to lead prayers. He also said that those who are best among us should give out a call for prayer known as adhan. This hadith teaches us that we must choose people with knowledge and good character to lead our prayers so we can benefit from their knowledge of Islam and their good character when praying together as a community. It also teaches us that we must respect those who have knowledge of Islam by giving them positions of leadership within our communities.
