Jami at-Tirmidhi 3894 (Book 49, Hadith 294) #29556
Boasting is Unacceptable

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised Hafsah to fear Allah and not boast about Safiyyah's lineage.

Narrated Anas: said: "It reached Safiyyah that Hafsah said: 'The daughter of a Jew' so she wept. Then the Prophet entered upon her while she was crying, so he said: 'What makes you cry?' She said: 'Hafsah said to me that I am the daughter of a Jew'. So the Prophet said: 'And you are the daughter of a Prophet, and your uncle is a Prophet, and you are married to a Prophet, so what is she boasting to you about?' Then he said: 'Fear Allah, O Hafsah'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Fear Allah at all times; Respect others regardless their background; Do not boast about your own accomplishments; Be humble; Be modest; Show kindness towards others; Treat everyone equally regardless their social status or religion .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Anas ibn Malik, speaks of the importance of respecting others and not boasting about one's own accomplishments or lineage. In this hadith, it is mentioned that Safiyyah was crying because Hafsah said she was the daughter of a Jew. The Prophet (ﷺ) then entered upon her while she was crying and asked her why she was crying. When Safiyyah told him what happened, he reminded her that she is the daughter of a prophet, her uncle is a prophet, and she is married to a prophet so there should be no reason for Hafsah to boast about anything in front of her. He then advised both women to fear Allah and respect each other instead of boasting or belittling each other's accomplishments or lineage. This hadith teaches us that we should always respect others regardless of their background or accomplishments as it does not make us any better than them in front of God. We should also remember to fear Allah at all times as He knows our intentions even if we are trying to hide them from people around us.
