The Prophet's Prayer for Forgiveness

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prayed for Al-'Abbas and his offspring, asking Allah to forgive them for all their sins, both known and unknown.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Al-'Abbas: 'On the night of Monday, come to me, you and your offspring, so that I may supplicate for them with a supplication that Allah will benefit you and your children by'. So he went, and we went with at night, so he ﷺ covered us in a Kisah (shawl), then said: 'O Allah, forgive Al-'Abbas and his offspring, for what is open and what is secret, with a forgiveness that does not leave any sins. O Allah! Take care of him concerning the affair of his offspring'."
حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ ثَوْرِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِلْعَبَّاسِ ‏"‏ إِذَا كَانَ غَدَاةُ الاِثْنَيْنِ فَأْتِنِي أَنْتَ وَوَلَدُكَ حَتَّى أَدْعُوَ لَهُمْ بِدَعْوَةٍ يَنْفَعُكَ اللَّهُ بِهَا وَوَلَدَكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَغَدَا وَغَدَوْنَا مَعَهُ وَأَلْبَسَنَا كِسَاءً ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏"‏ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْعَبَّاسِ وَوَلَدِهِ مَغْفِرَةً ظَاهِرَةً وَبَاطِنَةً لاَ تُغَادِرُ ذَنْبًا اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْهُ فِي وَلَدِهِ ‏"‏ ‏.هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ

This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's prayer of forgiveness for Al-'Abbas and his offspring. In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked Allah to forgive Al-'Abbas and his children for all their sins, both known and unknown. This shows us that we should always seek forgiveness from Allah no matter what our sins are. We should also ask Allah to take care of our families in all matters concerning them. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us that we should be kind to our family members by praying for them as the Prophet did with Al-'Abbas and his children. It also teaches us that we should never give up on seeking forgiveness from Allah no matter how many times we have sinned or how big those sins may be; rather, we must always strive to repent sincerely in order to receive His mercy.
