Jami at-Tirmidhi 3724 (Book 49, Hadith 121) #29383
The Prophet's Love for His Family

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's love for Ali and his family, and how he showed it by giving Ali a position of honor in battle, as well as calling him and his family when the ayah was revealed.

Narrated 'Amir bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas: from his father, saying "Mu'awiyah bin Abu Sufyan ordered Sa'd, saying 'What prevented you from reviling Abu Turab?' He said: 'Three things that I remember from the Messenger of Allah prevent me from reviling him. That I should have even one those things is more beloved to me than red camels. I heard the Messenger of Allah speaking to 'Ali, and he had left him behind in one of his battles. So 'Ali said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! You leave me behind with women and children?" So the Messenger of Allah said to him: "Are you not pleased that you should be in the position with me that Harun was with Musa? Except that there is no Prophethood after me?" And on the Day of (the battle of) Khaibar, I heard him saying: "I shall give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him". So we all waited for that, then he said: "Call 'Ali for me". He said: 'So he came to him, and he had been suffering from Ramad (an eye condition), so he put spittle in his eye and gave the banner to him, then Allah granted him victory. And when this Ayah was revealed: 'Let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women'. (3:61) the Messenger of Allah called 'Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husain and said: "O Allah, these are my family".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the immense love that the Prophet Muhammad had for his family, particularly Ali. It is narrated that Mu'awiyah asked Sa'd why he did not revile Abu Turab, to which Sa'd replied that three things he remembered from the Messenger of Allah prevented him from doing so. He then went on to explain how during one battle, 'Ali asked why he was left behind with women and children while everyone else went off to fight. In response, the Messenger of Allah said that 'Ali should be pleased with this position because it was similar to Harun's position with Musa - except there would be no Prophethood after him. On another occasion at Khaibar, when victory seemed uncertain, the Messenger of Allah called upon 'Ali who had been suffering from an eye condition at the time; after putting spittle in his eye and giving him a banner to lead them into battle they were victorious due to Allah's grace. Finally when Surat Al-Imran verse 61 was revealed - "Let us call our sons and your sons" -the Messenger of Allah called upon 'Ali along with Fatimah Hasan and Husain saying "O Allah these are my family". This shows us how much love and respect he held for them all throughout their lives together; even though they were not related by blood they were still considered part of one another’s families through faith alone.
