Jami at-Tirmidhi 3073 (Book 47, Hadith 125) #28722
The Reward of Good Deeds

SUMMARY: Allah rewards those who do good deeds and does not punish those who refrain from doing evil.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: that the Messenger of Allah said: "Allah, Blessed and Most High, has said - and His saying is the Truth: 'When My slave considers doing something good then write it as one good for him. If he acts upon it then write ten of the same for him. And when he considers doing something evil, then do not write it. If he acts upon it, then write it. If he leaves it" - and perhaps he said: "if he does not act upon it, then write a good reward for him'." Then he the Prophet recited: Whoever comes with a good, then he shall have ten the like thereof (6:160).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the reward for good deeds that Allah has promised to His believers. It is narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Prophet Muhammad said, “Allah, Blessed and Most High, has said - and His saying is the Truth: 'When My slave considers doing something good then write it as one good for him. If he acts upon it then write ten of the same for him. And when he considers doing something evil, then do not write it. If he acts upon it, then write it. If he leaves it" - and perhaps he said: "if he does not act upon it, then write a good reward for him.'" This means that if a person thinks about doing a good deed but doesn't actually do it yet they will still be rewarded by Allah with one point in their favor in Heaven's ledger book of deeds; however if they go ahead and perform this deed they will be rewarded with ten points instead! On the other hand if someone thinks about committing an evil deed but refrains from actually carrying out this action they will still receive a reward from Allah as He does not punish people for thinking bad thoughts but only punishes them when these thoughts are acted upon. The Prophet Muhammad also recited verse 6:160 which states “Whoever comes with a good, then he shall have ten the like thereof” to emphasize this point further.
