Sahih al-Bukhari 2917 (Book 56, Hadith 130) #2790
Generosity vs Miserliness

SUMMARY: The example of a miser and the one who gives in charity is like two men wearing iron cloaks so tightly that their arms are raised towards their collar-bones. The charitable person's cloak spreads over his body, while the miser's rings come closer to each other and press over his body.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "The example of a miser and the one who gives in charity, is like the example of two men wearing iron cloaks so tightly that their arms are raised forcibly towards their collar-bones. So, whenever a charitable person wants to give in charity, his cloak spreads over his body so much so that it wipes out his traces, but whenever the miser wants to give in charity, the rings (of the iron cloak) come closer to each other and press over his body, and his hands gets connected to his collarbones. Abu Huraira heard the Prophet saying".The miser then tries to widen it but in vain".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously without worrying or regretting it afterwards .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the difference between generosity and miserliness. It compares a generous person to someone wearing an iron cloak that is so loose it wipes out all traces of them, while a miserly person wears an iron cloak that is so tight it presses against their body and connects their hands to their collarbones. This metaphor shows how generosity can be freeing, while being stingy can be restrictive. It also implies that those who give generously will not have any regrets or worries about what they have given away, as it will be wiped away from memory just like the traces of someone wearing an iron cloak are wiped away. On the other hand, those who are stingy will always feel restricted by what they have kept for themselves as if they were wearing an iron cloak too tight for them to move freely in.

The hadith also teaches us about how our actions affect our lives; if we give generously then we will experience freedom from worry and regret, but if we keep everything for ourselves then we will feel restricted by our own greediness. We should strive to find balance between these two extremes in order to live a life of contentment and peace with ourselves and others around us.
