Jami at-Tirmidhi 2224 (Book 33, Hadith 67) #27857
Respect for Rulers

SUMMARY: Insulting the ruler is forbidden as it will lead to Allah's disgrace.

Ziyad bin Kusaib Al-'Adawi said: "I was with Abu Bakrah under the Minbar of Ibn 'Amir while he was giving a Khutbah wearing a fine garment. Abu Bilal said: 'Look at our Amir wearing clothes of wickedness!' So Abu Bakrah said: Be quiet! I heard the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) saying: "Whoever insults Allah's Sultan on the earth, Allah disgraces him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect towards those in authority over you; Think before you speak/act; Obey Allah's commands; Be kind towards others; Avoid insulting rulers at all costs .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that we should respect and honour our rulers, no matter what their position or status is. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that whoever insults Allah's Sultan on the earth, Allah will disgrace them. This means that if we disrespect our rulers, then Allah will not be pleased with us and He may punish us in some way. We should always remember to show respect and kindness towards those in authority over us, as this is a sign of obedience to Allah.

We can also learn from this hadith that it is important to think before we speak or act. Abu Bilal was about to insult Abu Bakrah but he was stopped by his reminder of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ words about respecting rulers. We should always take a moment before speaking or acting so that we can make sure our words and actions are pleasing to Allah and do not cause any harm or hurt anyone else’s feelings.
