Jami at-Tirmidhi 1393 (Book 16, Hadith 8) #26972
The Rewards of Forgiveness

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of forgiving someone who has wronged you and how it can lead to rewards from Allah.

Narrated Abu As-Safar: "A man from the Quraish broke a tooth of a man from the Ansar. So he appealed to Mu'awiyah against him. He said to Mu'awiyah: 'O Commander of the Believers! This person broke one of my teeth'. Mu'awiyah said: 'We will try to get satisfaction for you'. And the other person insisted that Mu'awiyah get him to agree but he was not satisfied. So Mu'awiyah said him: 'It is up to your companion'. Abu Ad-Darda' was sitting with him, so Abu Ad-Darda said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah saying he said: 'My ears heard and my heart remembered: "There is no man who is struck in his body and he forgives for it, except that Allah raises him a level and removes a sin from him'." The Ansari said: 'Did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah ?' He said: "My ears heard it and my heart remembered it'. He said: 'Then I will leave it to him'. Mu'awiyah said: 'Surely you should not suffer'. So he ordered that he be given some wealth".

QUICK LESSONS:
Forgive those who have done you harm

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of forgiveness in Islam. It tells the story of a man from the Quraish who broke a tooth of a man from the Ansar, and how Mu'awiyah tried to get satisfaction for him. However, Abu Ad-Darda' reminded them both that he heard Prophet Muhammad say that whoever is wronged but forgives will be rewarded by Allah with an increase in their level and have sins removed from them. Upon hearing this, the Ansari decided to forgive his offender and Mu'awiyah ordered that he be given some wealth as compensation. This hadith teaches us that even if we are wronged, we should still forgive those who have done us harm as it will bring us closer to Allah and result in rewards for us in this life and hereafter.
