The Impermissibility of Taking Back Gifts

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to take back a gift, except in the case of a father giving something to his son.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: That the Messenger of Allah said: "Ours is not a bad example: The one who takes back his gift is like the dog who takes back his vomit". He said: On this topic, there is the narration from Ibn 'Umar from the Prophet that he said: "It is not lawful for anyone that has given a gift to take it back, except for a father who gives something to his son".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your gifts; Do not take them back once they have been given away; Honor your parents; Treat them with kindness; Appreciate special bonds between people.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the impermissibility of taking back gifts. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that it is like a dog taking back its vomit, which is an unpleasant image. He also said that there is an exception to this rule, which is when a father gives something to his son. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our gifts and not take them back once they have been given away. We should also appreciate the special bond between fathers and sons, as Allah has commanded us to honor our parents and treat them with kindness.
