Sahih al-Bukhari 2741 (Book 55, Hadith 4) #2620
Appointing a Successor

SUMMARY: Aisha questions how the Prophet (ﷺ) could have appointed Ali as his successor when he died while resting in her lap.

Narrated Al-Aswad: In the presence of 'Aisha some people mentioned that the Prophet had appointed 'Ali by will as his successor'.Aisha said, "When did he appoint him by will? Verily when he died he was resting against my chest (or said: in my lap) and he asked for a wash-basin and then collapsed while in that state, and I could not even perceive that he had died, so when did he appoint him by will?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Accept whatever comes your way without questioning it too much because we do not know what Allah has planned for us or what He has written for us in our destiny.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the succession of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and how it was done. It is narrated by Al-Aswad that some people were discussing in front of Aisha, one of the wives of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, that he had appointed Ali as his successor by will. To this, Aisha asked when did he appoint him by will since she was with him when he passed away and she did not even realize that he had died until after some time. This shows us that succession was not something which was planned or discussed before hand but rather it happened naturally at the time of death. It also teaches us to be humble and accept whatever comes our way without questioning it too much because we do not know what Allah has planned for us or what He has written for us in our destiny.
