The Importance of Reciting Tashah-hud Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith teaches us the importance of reciting the Tashah-hud prayer and its components, as well as testifying to the oneness of Allah and that Muhammad is His worshipper and Messenger.

Ibn Abbas narrated: "Allah's Messenger would teach us the Tashah-hud just as he would teach us the Qur'an. He would say: (At-Tahiyyatu, al mubarakatu, as-salawatu at-tayyibatulillah. Salamun alaika ayyuhan-naibiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, salamun alaina wa ala ibadalillahis-salihin. Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa Raduluh) 'All greetings, goodness, prayers, and pure words are for Allah. Peace be upon you O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and His blessings, Peace be upon us and all of the righteous worshippers of Allah. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is Allah's worshipper and Messenger'."

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas tells us about a prayer called the "Tashah-hud". This prayer is an important part of our daily prayers, which we recite after every two rak'ahs. It consists of several phrases that are meant to be said in order to glorify Allah and show our love for Him. In this hadith, we learn that Prophet Muhammad taught us this prayer just like he taught us verses from the Qur'an. He would say phrases such as "At-tahiyyatu lillahi" which means all greetings are for Allah, or "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah" which means I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah. We also learn from this hadith that Prophet Muhammad was not only a messenger but also a worshipper who devoted his life to serving God. By reciting these words in our daily prayers, we can remember these teachings and strive to follow them in our lives too.
