Salutations to the Living

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised against using the phrase "Upon you be peace" as a salutation to the living.

Narrated AbuJurayy al-Hujaymi: I came to the Prophet and said: Upon you be peace, Messenger of Allah! He said: Do not say: Upon you be peace, for "Upon you be peace" is the salutation to the dead.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show Respect & Kindness When Speaking With Others , Use Appropriate Phrases When Addressing Those Who Have Passed Away

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how one should greet people who are alive. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised against using the phrase "Upon you be peace" as a salutation to those who are living. This is because this phrase is usually used for those who have passed away and it would not be appropriate to use it for someone who is still alive. Instead, he suggested that people use other phrases such as “Peace be upon you” or “May Allah bless you” when greeting someone in person or over the phone. He also taught us that we should always show respect and kindness when speaking with others and that we should never forget our manners even in casual conversations.

The values taught by this hadith include showing respect for others, being mindful of our words and actions, being kind and courteous in all interactions, and remembering our manners at all times. It also reminds us of how important it is to remember those who have passed away by using appropriate phrases when speaking about them or addressing them directly.
