The Prophet's Bedtime Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite a prayer before going to sleep, asking Allah to protect him from punishment on the day of judgement.

Narrated Hafsah, Ummul Mu'minin: When the Messenger of Allah wanted to go to sleep, he put his right hand under his cheek and would then say three times: O Allah, guard me from Thy punishment on the day when Thou Raisest up Thy servants.
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ، عَنْ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ سَوَاءٍ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَانَ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْقُدَ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى تَحْتَ خَدِّهِ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ ثَلاَثَ مِرَارٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
Before going to sleep each night, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite a special prayer asking Allah for protection from His punishment on the day of judgement. This is known as Qiyamah or the Day of Resurrection when all people will be judged for their deeds in this life. This prayer is known as dua'a and it is an important part of Islamic practice. It serves as a reminder that we should always strive to do good deeds and seek forgiveness from Allah for our wrongdoings. By reciting this prayer every night before bedtime, we can ensure that we are constantly mindful of our actions and striving towards righteousness in order to gain Allah's mercy and protection on the day of judgement.
