Sunan Abi Dawud 4997 (Book 43, Hadith 225) #25288
The Sin of False Boasting

SUMMARY: Boasting of receiving something one has not been given is wrong and is like wearing two garments of falsehood.

Asma’, daughter of Abu Bakr, told of a woman who said : Messenger of Allah! I have a fellow-wife; will it be wrong for me to boast of receiving from my husband what he does not give me? He replied: the one who boasts of receiving what he has not been given is like him who has put on two garments of falsehood.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the sin of false boasting. It was narrated by Asma, daughter of Abu Bakr, who told a story about a woman who asked the Prophet Muhammad if it was wrong for her to boast about receiving something from her husband that he did not give her. The Prophet replied that it was wrong and likened it to someone wearing two garments made out of falsehood. This hadith teaches us that we should never boast or lie about what we have or do not have as this is considered a sin in Islam. We should always be honest and truthful in our words and actions so as to maintain our integrity and honor in society.
