Sunan Abi Dawud 4829 (Book 43, Hadith 57) #25120
The Sweetness of Believers & Bitter Taste of Profligates

SUMMARY: The hadith compares believers who recite the Qur'an to sweet-smelling and tasting fruits, and profligates who recite the Qur'an to bitter-tasting herbs. It also compares good companions to musk, whose fragrance will reach you even if nothing of it goes to you, and bad companions to bellows, whose smoke will reach you even if its root does not go to you.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Prophet said: A believer who recites the Qur'an is like a citron whose fragrance is sweet and whose taste is sweet, a believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like a date which has no fragrance but has sweet taste, a profligate who recites the Qur'an is like basil whose fragrance is sweet but whose taste is bitter, and the profligate who does not recite the Qur'an is like the Colocynth which has a bitter taste and has not fragrance. A good companion is like a man who has musk; if nothing of it goes to you, its fragrance will (certainly) go to you; and a bad companion is like a man who has bellows; if its (black) root does not go to you, its smoke will (certainly) go to you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Recite Quran regularly & Choose Friends Wisely

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how believers should be like in comparison with profligates. It compares believers who recite the Qur'an with sweet-smelling and tasting fruits such as citrons and dates while comparing profligates who recite the Qur'an with bitter-tasting herbs such as basil or colocynth. Furthermore, it also talks about good companions being like musk which has a pleasant fragrance that can be felt even if nothing of it goes directly towards us; whereas bad companions are like bellows which have a smoky smell that can still be felt even when its root does not come near us. This hadith teaches us that we should strive for righteousness by reciting the Quran regularly so we can become more fragrant in our faith just like citrons or dates; while avoiding any kind of sinful behavior so we don't end up becoming bitter in our faith just like basil or colocynth. We should also choose our friends wisely because they have an influence on us whether they are good or bad ones; just like how musk's scent reaches us without having anything from it going directly towards us, similarly a good friend's influence on someone is always positive no matter what happens between them; likewise a bad friend's influence on someone is always negative no matter what happens between them - this is why we must choose our friends carefully!
