Sahih al-Bukhari 2609 (Book 51, Hadith 42) #2496
Repaying Debts Generously

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that those who have a right to something should be given what is due to them, and the best amongst us are those who repay their debts in the most generous way.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet took a camel of special age from somebody on credit. Its owner came and demanded it back (harshly). The Prophet said, "No doubt, he who has a right, can demand it". Then the Prophet gave him an older camel than his camel and said, "The best amongst you is he who repays his debts in the most handsome way".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind when demanding repayment of your debt; repay your debt generously; treat others with respect even if they owe you something; give more than what is owed if possible

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of repaying our debts in a generous manner. It was narrated by Abu Huraira, who reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ took a camel from someone on credit. When its owner came to demand it back, he was treated kindly and given an older camel than his own as repayment instead. The Prophet ﷺ then said “The best amongst you is he who repays his debts in the most handsome way”. This hadith encourages us to be generous when we are able to pay back our debts, as this will make us better people and bring blessings upon us from Allah SWT. We should also remember that if someone has a right over something we owe them, then they should be given what is due to them without any harshness or rudeness on our part.
