Excellence of the Companions

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the excellence of three companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and their ranking in terms of excellence.

Ibn 'Umar said: When the Messenger of Allah was alive, we used to say: The most excellent member of the community of the Prophet after himself is Abu Bakr, then 'Umar, then 'Uthman.
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَنْبَسَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، قَالَ قَالَ سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ قَالَ كُنَّا نَقُولُ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَىٌّ أَفْضَلُ أُمَّةِ النَّبِيِّ بَعْدَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ عُمَرُ ثُمَّ عُثْمَانُ رضى الله عنهم أَجْمَعِينَ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the excellence and ranking of three companions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. These companions are Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman. They were known to be some of the most excellent members in the community after Prophet Muhammad himself. They were highly respected for their knowledge, wisdom, piety and devotion to Islam. The hadith also teaches us that we should respect those who have been given a higher rank than us by Allah or His Messenger as it is an act that pleases Allah. We should also strive to become better Muslims by following their example so that we can attain a higher rank in this life and hereafter.
