Sunan Abi Dawud 4573 (Book 41, Hadith 80) #24864
Deciding Without Hearing

SUMMARY: Umar was on the pulpit and mentioned a tradition that did not include killing a female slave, but instead suggested something else. He then said that if he had not heard it, they would have decided something else.

Narrated Tawus: Umar stood on the pulpit. He then mentioned the rest of the tradition to the same effect as mentioned before. He did not mention "that she should be killed". This version adds: "a male or a female slave". Umar then said: Allah is Most Great. Had I not heard it, we would have decided about it something else.

QUICK LESSONS:
Listen before deciding/judging

EXPLANATIONS:
Umar was on the pulpit and mentioned a tradition that did not include killing a female slave, but instead suggested something else. This shows us the importance of hearing before deciding or making any judgement about an issue. Umar himself said that if he had not heard it, they would have decided something else which implies that we should always listen to what is being said before making any decisions or judgements about an issue. This hadith also teaches us to be humble and accept when we are wrong as Umar accepted his mistake in this case by saying "Had I not heard it, we would have decided about it something else".
