Sunan Abi Dawud 4525 (Book 41, Hadith 32) #24816
Paying Bloodwite

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wrote to the Jews asking them to pay a bloodwit for a slain man found amongst them, but they denied any knowledge of the slayer. The Prophet then paid the bloodwit himself.

Narrated 'Abd al-Rahman b. Bujaid: I swear by Allah, Sahl had a misunderstanding about this tradition. The Messenger of Allah wrote to the Jews: A slain man has been found amongst you, so pay his bloodwit. They wrote (to him): Swearing by Allah fifty oaths, we neither killed him nor do we know his slayer. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah himself paid his bloodwite which consisted of one hundred she-camels.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous and kind even when faced with adversity or denial from others; Strive to do what is right even if it means going out of our way or sacrificing something ourselves in order to do so .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about an incident that occurred between the Prophet Muhammad and some Jews. The Prophet wrote to them asking them to pay a bloodwit for a slain man found amongst them, but they denied any knowledge of the slayer. A bloodwit is money or goods given by someone who has killed another person in order to compensate their family for their loss. In this case, it was one hundred she-camels as compensation for the death of this man. Despite their denial, the Prophet still paid out of his own pocket as an act of kindness and generosity towards those who were wronged by this crime. This hadith teaches us that we should always be generous and kind even when faced with adversity or denial from others, and that we should always strive to do what is right even if it means going out of our way or sacrificing something ourselves in order to do so.
