Sunan Abi Dawud 4522 (Book 41, Hadith 29) #24813
Killing in Self Defense

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) killed a man from the Banu Nadr ibn Malik tribe at Harrah ar-Righa' near Layyat al-Bahrah.

Narrated 'Amr b. Shu'aib: The Messenger of Allah killed a man of Banu Nadr ibn Malik at Harrah ar-Righa' at the bank of Layyat al-Bahrah. The transmitter Mahmud (ibn Khalid) also mentioned the words along with the words "at Bahrah" "the slayer and the slain were from among them". Mahmud alone transmitted in this tradition the words "at the bank of Layyah".

QUICK LESSONS:
Defend yourself if you are attacked or threatened with harm; use caution when using violence; protect yourself and your people from harm if necessary.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's actions when he was defending himself and his people against an attack from the Banu Nadr ibn Malik tribe. He killed one of their members at Harrah ar-Righa', which was near Layyat al-Bahrah. This shows that self defense is allowed in Islam and that it is important to protect oneself and one's people from harm. However, it also teaches us that violence should only be used as a last resort and with caution as it can have serious consequences for both sides involved.
