Prohibitions of Gold and Panther Skins

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad forbade wearing gold and riding on panther skins.

Narrated Mu'awiyah ibn AbuSufyan: The Messenger of Allah forbade to ride on panther skins and to wear gold except a little. Abu Dawud said: The narrator Abu Qilabah did not meet Mu'awiyah.
حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ مَيْمُونٍ الْقَنَّادِ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَهَى عَنْ رُكُوبِ النِّمَارِ وَعَنْ لُبْسِ الذَّهَبِ إِلاَّ مُقَطَّعًا ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ أَبُو قِلاَبَةَ لَمْ يَلْقَ مُعَاوِيَةَ

The Prophet Muhammad taught his followers to avoid certain behaviors such as wearing gold and riding on panther skins. Wearing gold was seen as a sign of vanity and extravagance while riding on panther skins was seen as a sign of arrogance. These behaviors were discouraged by the Prophet in order to promote humility among his followers. He also wanted them to focus more on spiritual matters rather than material ones. This hadith serves as an important reminder for us to be mindful of our actions and strive for humility in all aspects of life.
