Sunan Abi Dawud 4188 (Book 35, Hadith 30) #24478
Changing Hairstyles

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) initially followed the hairstyle of the People of the Book, but later changed it to part his hair.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The people of the Book used to let their hair hand down, and the polytheists used to part their hair. The Messenger of Allah like to confirm with the People of the Book in the matters about which he had received no command. Hence he Messenger of Allah let his forelock hang down but afterwards he parted it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect other religions and cultures; Be open-minded; Change habits if necessary

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Prophet Muhammad's hairstyle changed over time. Initially, he followed the same style as the People of the Book, which was to let their hair hang down. However, later on he decided to part his hair instead. This shows us that even though Prophet Muhammad was a messenger from Allah and received divine revelations, he still respected other religions and cultures and tried to follow them in certain matters when there were no clear instructions from Allah. It also teaches us that we should be open-minded and willing to change our habits if necessary for our own benefit or for others'.
