Expressing Gratitude and Seeking Refuge

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) expressing gratitude to Allah for providing him with a new garment and seeking refuge from its evil.

Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri: When the Messenger of Allah put on a new garment he mentioned it by name, turban or shirt, and would then say: O Allah, praise be to Thee! as Thou hast clothed me with it, I ask Thee for its good and the good of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge in Thee from its evil and the evil of that for which it was made. Abu Nadrah said: When any of the Companions of the Prophet put on a new garment, he was told: May you wear it out and may Allah give you another in its place.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of expressing gratitude to Allah for all that He has provided us with. It also speaks of seeking refuge in Allah from any evil associated with it. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would express his gratitude by mentioning the name of the clothing he was wearing and then supplicating to Allah for its good and protection from its evil. Similarly, when any of his companions put on a new garment they were told to wear it out so that Allah may provide them with another one in its place. This teaches us that we should be thankful for whatever we have been given by our Lord and seek His protection against anything bad associated with it.
