Sahih al-Bukhari 2524 (Book 49, Hadith 8) #2415
Manumitting Slaves

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that if someone has enough money to free a slave, they should do so and not just manumit their own share.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet said, "He who manumits his share of a slave and has money sufficient to free the remaining portion of that slave's price (justly estimated) then he should manumit him (by giving the rest of his price to the other co-owners)". Nafi' added, "Otherwise the slave is partially free". Aiyub is not sure whether the last statement was said by Nafi' or it was a part of the Hadith.

QUICK LESSONS:
Freeing slaves when you have enough money to do so.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of freeing slaves. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that if someone has enough money to free a slave, they should do so and not just manumit their own share. This means that if one person owns part of a slave, but another person owns the rest, then the first person should use their money to pay for the other person's portion in order to fully free the slave. If this isn't done, then technically only part of the slave is freed and they are still owned by someone else. It is important for us to remember this teaching from our beloved Prophet ﷺ as it shows us how important it was for him that all people be treated with respect and dignity regardless of whether or not they are enslaved.
