Avoiding Pork and Wine Vessels

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of avoiding eating and drinking from vessels that contain pork or wine.

Abu Tha’labah al-khushani said that he asked the Messenger of Allah: We live in the neighbourhood of the People of the Book and they cook in their pots(the flesh of) swine and drink wine in their vessels. The Messenger of Allah said: If you find any other pots, then eat in them and drink. But if you do not find any others, then wash them with water and eat and drink (In them).
حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ بْنِ زَبْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، مُسْلِمِ بْنِ مِشْكَمٍ عَنْ أَبِي ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيِّ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ إِنَّا نُجَاوِرُ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ وَهُمْ يَطْبُخُونَ فِي قُدُورِهِمُ الْخِنْزِيرَ وَيَشْرَبُونَ فِي آنِيَتِهِمُ الْخَمْرَ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ إِنْ وَجَدْتُمْ غَيْرَهَا فَكُلُوا فِيهَا وَاشْرَبُوا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدُوا غَيْرَهَا فَارْحَضُوهَا بِالْمَاءِ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of avoiding eating and drinking from vessels that contain pork or wine. The narrator, Abu Thalabah al-khushani, asked the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) if it was permissible to eat in pots containing pork or drink from vessels containing wine. The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) replied that if there were other pots available then one should use them instead, but if not then one should wash the vessel with water before using it for food or drink. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of what we consume and to avoid consuming anything that is considered haram in Islam such as pork and alcohol. It also teaches us to be conscious of our environment by washing any vessel we may come across before using it for food or drink.
