Be careful about what you eat ; Make sure whatever you consume is permissible according to Islamic teachings ; Show respect towards food items even if they are permissible for consumption according to Islamic teachings .

This hadith is about a situation where Ibn 'Abbas's maternal aunt presented to the Messenger of Allah clarified butter, lizards and cottage cheese. The Prophet Muhammad ate from clarified butter and cheese, but left the lizard abominably. It was eaten on the food cloth of the Messenger of Allah which indicates that it is not unlawful to eat lizards as it was present in his presence without any objection or disapproval from him. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful about what we eat and make sure that whatever we consume is permissible according to Islamic teachings before consuming it. We should also be mindful of our manners when eating something as even if something is permissible, we should still show respect for it by not eating it abominably or disrespectfully like in this case with lizards being left abominably by Prophet Muhammad himself despite being permissible for consumption according to Islamic teachings.
