Sunan Abi Dawud 3732 (Book 27, Hadith 64) #24022
The Danger of Negligence

SUMMARY: The devil does not open a shut door, or loosen a water-skin, or uncover a vessel. A mouse can set a house on fire and cause harm to its inhabitants.

Jabir b.’Abd Allah reported the Prophet as saying this version is not complete '’for the devil does not open a shut door, or loosen a water-skin, or uncover a vessel, for a mouse sets a house on fire over its inhabitants’’.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of potential dangers due to negligence

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us about the danger of negligence. It is reported by Jabir b.Abd Allah that the Prophet said that the devil does not open a shut door, or loosen a water-skin, or uncover a vessel. He was emphasizing how even small acts of negligence can lead to great destruction and harm. For example, if we leave our doors unlocked then it could be an opportunity for thieves to enter our homes and steal from us. Similarly, leaving uncovered vessels can attract pests like mice which can cause fires in our homes leading to destruction and loss of life. Therefore this hadith teaches us that we should always be mindful of our actions and take precautions against any potential dangers so as to avoid any unfortunate incidents from occurring due to negligence on our part.
