Sunan Abi Dawud 3486 (Book 24, Hadith 71) #23776
Forbidden Items in Trade

SUMMARY: Allah has forbidden the sale of wine, animals which have died a natural death, swine and idols. The fat of such animals is also forbidden to be sold for any purpose.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah : That he heard the Messenger of Allah say in the year of the Conquest when he was in Mecca: Allah has forbidden the sale of wine, animals which have dead natural death, swine and idols. He was asked: Messenger of Allah, what do you think of the fat of animals which had died a natural death, for it was used for caulking ships, greasing skins, and making oil for lamps? He replies: No, it is forbidden. Thereafter, the Messenger of Allah said: May Allah curse the Jews! When Allah declared the fat of such animals lawful, they melted it, then sold it, and enjoyed the price they received.

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey God's commands without question or hesitation .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that Allah has prohibited the sale of certain items including wine, animals which have died a natural death, swine and idols. It further explains that even the fat from these animals is not allowed to be sold for any purpose. The Prophet Muhammad was asked about this and he replied that it was forbidden as well. He then cursed the Jews who melted down this fat and sold it for their own benefit despite Allah declaring it lawful. This hadith teaches us to obey Allah's commands without question or hesitation and not try to find loopholes in order to benefit ourselves financially or otherwise at the expense of others.
