Accepting Gifts for Allah's Path

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraging Ubaydah ibn as-Samit to accept a bow presented to him and use it in Allah's path.

Narrated Ubaydah ibn as-Samit: I taught some persons of the people of Suffah writing and the Qur'an. A man of them presented to me a bow. I said: It cannot be reckoned property; may I shoot with it in Allah's path? I must come to the Apostle of of Allah and ask him (about it). So I came to him and said : Messenger of Allah , one of those whom I have been teaching writing and the Qur'an has presented me a bow, and as it cannot be reckoned property, may I shoot with it in Allah's path? He said: If you want to have a necklace of fire on you, accept it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of accepting gifts from others, especially when they are given with good intentions. In this case, a man from those whom Ubaydah was teaching writing and the Qur'an presented him with a bow. He asked the Prophet Muhammad if he could shoot with it in Allah’s path, and he was encouraged to do so. The Prophet said that if he accepted it, then it would be like having a necklace of fire on him - meaning that his reward would be great for using this gift in service of God. This hadith teaches us that we should accept gifts from others when they are given out of love or kindness, and use them for good deeds such as helping others or serving God’s cause. It also shows us how generous and kind the Prophet Muhammad was towards his followers - even encouraging them to accept gifts!
