Sunan Abi Dawud 3414 (Book 23, Hadith 89) #23704
Apportioning Khaybar

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad allowed the people of Khaybar to remain in their land and apportioned it between them and himself, then sent Abdullah ibn Rawahah to assess the amount of dates they had.

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: When Allah bestowed Khaybar on His Prophet as fay' (as a result of conquest without fighting), the Messenger of Allah allowed (them) to remain there as they were before, and apportioned it between him and them. He then sent Abdullah ibn Rawahah who assessed (the amount of dates) upon them.

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat others with respect regardless of their status or position in society; Be generous with your resources; Be mindful when you are in a position power or authority; Show justice towards those under your control .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad treated the people of Khaybar after he conquered it. He allowed them to stay in their land and apportioned it between him and them. He then sent Abdullah ibn Rawahah who assessed the amount of dates they had. This shows that even though he was victorious, he still respected those who were defeated by treating them fairly and kindly. It also teaches us that we should be generous with our resources, as well as being mindful of others’ needs when we are in a position of power or authority. The Prophet Muhammad showed us how to be just leaders by not taking advantage of those under our control but instead treating everyone with respect regardless of their status or position in society.
