Sunan Abi Dawud 3317 (Book 22, Hadith 76) #23607
Keeping Property for Oneself

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad advised Ka'b ibn Malik to keep some of his property for himself, as it would be better for him.

Narrated Ka'b ibn Malik: I said: Messenger of Allah, to make my repentance complete I should divest myself of my property as sadaqah (alms) for Allah and His Apostle. The Messenger of Allah said: Retain some of your property, for that will be better for you. So he said: I shall retain the portion I have at Khaybar.

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad is advising Ka'b ibn Malik on how to make his repentance complete. He suggests that he should give away some of his property as sadaqah or charity in the way of Allah and His Messenger. However, the Prophet also advises him to retain some of his property, as it will be better for him. Ka'b then decides to keep the portion he has at Khaybar. This hadith teaches us that while giving away our wealth in charity is important and a great act of worship, we should also remember to take care of ourselves and our families by keeping enough wealth with us so that we can provide them with their needs.
