Fulfilling Vows with Sacrifice

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ ordered a woman to ride and slaughter a sacrificial animal after she took a vow to walk on foot to the Ka'bah.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: That the sister of 'Uqbah b. 'Amir took vow to walk on foot to the Ka'bah. Thereupon the Prophet ordered her to ride and slaughter a sacrificial animal.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take your vows seriously and fulfill them in some way or another with sincerity and obedience towards Allah's commands.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of fulfilling one's vows. In this case, the sister of 'Uqbah b. 'Amir had taken a vow to walk on foot to the Ka'bah. However, instead of making her fulfill her vow in its literal sense, the Prophet instructed her to ride and slaughter a sacrificial animal instead. This teaches us that we should not take vows lightly as they are serious commitments that must be fulfilled in some way or another. We should also remember that if we cannot fulfill our vows in their literal sense due to certain circumstances, then it is permissible for us to find an alternative way of fulfilling them as long as it is done with sincerity and obedience towards Allah's commands.
