Sunan Abi Dawud 3141 (Book 21, Hadith 53) #23431
Washing of the Prophet (PBUH)

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the washing of the Prophet (PBUH) after his death and how Allah cast a slumber over them until they were able to come to a consensus on how to proceed.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: By Allah, we did not know whether we should take off the clothes of the Messenger of Allah as we took off the clothes of our dead, or wash him while his clothes were on him. When they (the people) differed among themselves, Allah cast slumber over them until every one of them had put his chin on his chest. Then a speaker spoke from a side of the house, and they did not know who he was: Wash the Prophet while his clothes are on him. So they stood round the Prophet and washed him while he had his shirt on him. They poured water on his shirt, and rubbed him with his shirt and not with their hands. Aisha used to say: If I had known beforehand about my affair what I found out later, none would have washed him except his wives.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your elders even in death

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the washing of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ after his death. It was narrated by Aisha Ummul Mu'minin that when people were unsure whether they should take off his clothes or wash him while wearing them, Allah cast a slumber over them until everyone put their chin on their chest. Then someone spoke from a side of the house and said that they should wash him while he was wearing his shirt. So they washed him with water poured onto his shirt and rubbed it against him instead of using their hands. Aisha later said that if she had known beforehand what she found out later then none would have washed him except for his wives. This hadith teaches us about respecting our elders even in death as well as coming together in times of difficulty to reach consensus on important matters.
