Sahih al-Bukhari 2429 (Book 45, Hadith 4) #2323
Lost Items & Responsibility

SUMMARY: When finding a lost item, one should make an announcement for its owner and if the owner does not show up, then one can do whatever they like with it. If a sheep is found, it is either for the finder or its owner or the wolf. A camel however should be left alone as it will find water and food until its owner finds it.

Narrated Zaid bin Khalid: A man came and asked Allah's Messenger about picking a lost thing. The Prophet said, "Remember the description of its container and the string it is tied with, and make public announcement about it for one year. If the owner shows up, give it to him; otherwise, do whatever you like with it". He then asked, "What about a lost sheep?" The Prophet said, "It is for you, for your brother (ie its owner), or for the wolf". He further asked, "What about a lost camel?" The Prophet said, "It is none of your concern. It has its water-container (reservoir) and its feet, and it will reach water and drink it and eat the trees till its owner finds it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make an announcement about any found items ; Remember description of container & string tied with ; Give back items which belong rightfully someone else's ; Be kind & compassionate towards animals .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about our responsibility when we come across a lost item. We must remember the description of its container and string that ties it together and make an announcement about it for one year in order to give the rightful owner time to claim their property back. If no one shows up after a year, then we can do whatever we like with that item. In addition, if we come across a lost sheep, then this belongs either to us or to its rightful owner or even to the wolf who may have been hungry enough to take this animal away from its home. Lastly, if we come across a lost camel then this is none of our concern as camels are able to find food and water on their own until their owners find them again.
