Sunan Abi Dawud 2892 (Book 19, Hadith 8) #23182
Taking Care of Orphans

SUMMARY: The wife of Sa'd b. al-Rabi asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about what to do with her two daughters after her husband's death.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah : The wife of Sa'd b. al-Rabi said: Messenger of Allah, Sa'd died and left two daughters. He then narrated the rest of the tradition in a similar way. Abu Dawud said: This is the most correct tradition.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take care of orphans regardless if you have any blood relation or not; Be generous towards those in need; Show compassion towards others; Ask for help from other people when needed .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about taking care of orphans and the responsibility that comes with it. It was narrated by Jabir bin 'Abdullah who reported that the wife of Sa'd b. al-Rabi asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) what she should do with her two daughters after her husband's death. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised her to marry them off when they reach a certain age and to be generous in giving their dowries if they are poor so that they can live comfortably in their new homes. He also said that if she could not afford to give them a dowry then she should ask for help from other people who are able to help out financially or otherwise so that these girls can have a good life even without their father around anymore. This hadith teaches us about our responsibility towards orphans and how we should take care of them even if we don't have any blood relation with them as Allah has commanded us to do so in His book and through His messenger Muhammad PBUH. We must ensure that these children get all the love, support and guidance they need from us as much as possible so that they can grow up into responsible adults who will be beneficial for society at large too!
