Sunan Abi Dawud 2877 (Book 18, Hadith 16) #23167
Fulfilling Obligations on Behalf of Others

SUMMARY: A woman asked the Prophet if she could fast and perform Hajj on behalf of her deceased slave-girl, to which he replied in the affirmative.

Narrated Buraidah: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah and said: I donated my slave-girl to my mother, but she died and left the slave-girl. He said: Your reward became due, and she came back to you in inheritance. She said: She died while a month's fasting was due from her. Would it be sufficient or be taken as completed if I fast on her behalf ? He said: Yes. She said: She also did not perform Hajj. Would it be sufficient or be taken completed if I perform (Hajj) on her behalf ? He said: Yes.

QUICK LESSONS:
Fulfill obligations for others when they are unable to do so themselves due to death or other reasons.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about fulfilling obligations on behalf of others. It is narrated by Buraidah that a woman came to the Prophet and asked him if she could fast and perform Hajj on behalf of her deceased slave-girl. The Prophet replied in the affirmative, meaning that it was permissible for her to do so. This hadith teaches us that we can fulfill obligations such as fasting and performing Hajj for those who are unable to do so themselves due to death or other reasons. It also shows us how generous and kind the Prophet was towards people, even those who were not Muslims at the time.
