Sunan Abi Dawud 2801 (Book 16, Hadith 14) #23091
The Significance of Sacrifice

SUMMARY: A man sacrificed a goat before the prayer for 'Id, and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) told him that it was meant for flesh. He then offered a domestic kid instead, to which the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that it was valid only for him.

Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib: A maternal uncle of mine called AbuBurdah sacrificed before the prayer (for 'Id). The Messenger of Allah said: Your goat is meant for flesh. He said: Messenger of Allah, I have a domestic kid with me. He said: Sacrifice it, but it is not valid for any man other than you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the significance of sacrifice in Islam. It is narrated by Al-Bara' ibn Azib that his maternal uncle called Abu Burda sacrificed before the prayer for 'Id. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said that his goat was meant for flesh and he should offer a domestic kid instead as an alternative sacrifice. However, this would be valid only if he himself offered it and not anyone else on his behalf. This hadith highlights how important sacrifice is in Islam as an act of worship to Allah SWT and how it should be done with sincerity and dedication by oneself rather than delegating someone else to do so on one's behalf. It also teaches us about being mindful of our actions when performing religious duties such as offering sacrifices during festivals like 'Id al-Adha or any other time throughout the year.
