Sunan Abi Dawud 2730 (Book 15, Hadith 254) #23020
Kindness to Slaves

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) showed mercy and kindness to a slave by not allotting him a portion of the spoils.

Narrated Umayr, client of AbulLahm: I was present at Khaybar along with my masters who spoke about me to the Messenger of Allah . He ordered about me, and a sword was girded on me and I was trailing it. He was then informed that I was a slave. He, therefore, ordered that I should be given some inferior goods. Abu Dawud said: This means that he (the Prophet) did not allot a portion of the spoils. Abu Dawud said: Abu 'Ubaid said: As he (the narrator Abi al-Lahm) made eating meat unlawful on himself, he was called Abi al-Lahm (one who hates meat).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) exemplary character and his kindness towards slaves. Umayr was present at Khaybar with his masters who spoke highly of him to the Prophet. The Prophet then ordered that a sword be girded on him and he was trailing it. However, when he found out that Umayr was a slave, he showed mercy and did not allot him any portion of the spoils. Abu Dawud said that this meant that he did not give Umayr any share in the spoils as an act of mercy towards him due to his status as a slave. As Umayr made eating meat unlawful on himself due to his devotion to Allah SWT, he was called Abi al-Lahm which means one who hates meat in Arabic. This hadith shows us how important it is for us Muslims to show kindness and mercy towards those less fortunate than us such as slaves or people from lower social classes or backgrounds. It also teaches us about our duty as Muslims towards those around us regardless of their social standing or background; we must always strive for justice and fairness in all our dealings with others no matter what their status may be in society or life itself.
