Facilitating Manumission of Slaves

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) facilitated the manumission of a slave by helping to find a buyer for it.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: A man pledged that his slave would be manumitted after his death. The Prophet asked, "Who will buy the slave from me?" Nu'aim bin 'Abdullah bought the slave and the Prophet took its price and gave it to the owner.
حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ الْمُعَلِّمُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ أَعْتَقَ رَجُلٌ غُلاَمًا لَهُ عَنْ دُبُرٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ "‏ مَنْ يَشْتَرِيهِ مِنِّي ‏"‏‏.‏ فَاشْتَرَاهُ نُعَيْمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، فَأَخَذَ ثَمَنَهُ، فَدَفَعَهُ إِلَيْهِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates an incident in which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ facilitated the manumission of a slave. A man had pledged that his slave would be freed after his death and so the Prophet ﷺ asked who would buy the slave from him. Nu'aim bin 'Abdullah bought it and gave its price to its owner. This hadith teaches us that freeing slaves is an important act in Islam and should be done whenever possible. It also shows us how much importance was given to fulfilling promises made by people as well as respecting contracts between two parties. Furthermore, this hadith also highlights how merciful and compassionate the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was towards all people regardless of their social status or background.
