Sunan Abi Dawud 2673 (Book 15, Hadith 197) #22963
Punishment by Fire is Reserved for Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet appointed Hamzah al-Aslami as commander over a detachment and instructed him to kill someone if he found them, rather than burning them with fire, as only the Lord of the fire has the right to punish with fire.

Narrated Hamzah al-Aslami: The Messenger of Allah appointed him commander over a detachment. He said: I went out along with it. He (the Prophet) said: If you find so-and-so, burn him with the fire. I then turned away, and he called me. So I returned to him, and he said: If you find so-and-so, kill him, and do not burn him, for no one punishes with fire except the Lord of the fire.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect God's authority in all matters and do not try to usurp His power or authority in any way .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about punishment and how it should be carried out. The Prophet appointed Hamzah al-Aslami as commander over a detachment and instructed him to kill someone if he found them, rather than burning them with fire. This is because only the Lord of the fire has the right to punish with fire. This hadith teaches us that we should not take matters into our own hands when it comes to punishing people for their wrongdoings; instead, we should leave it up to God who knows best what kind of punishment is appropriate for each individual situation. It also teaches us that we must respect God's authority in all matters and not try to usurp His power or authority in any way.
