Sahih al-Bukhari 2390 (Book 43, Hadith 6) #2286
Repaying Debts Generously

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that it is important to repay debts in a generous manner, even if the repayment is not equal to what was borrowed.

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man demanded his debts from Allah's Messenger in such a rude manner that the companions of the Prophet intended to harm him, but the Prophet said, "Leave him, no doubt, for he (the creditor) has the right to demand it (harshly). Buy a camel and give it to him". They said, "The camel that is available is older than the camel he demands".The Prophet said, "Buy it and give it to him, for the best among you are those who repay their debts handsomely".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind and generous towards others; Pay your debts generously; Show kindness even if someone has been rude or demanding in their approach

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of repaying our debts in a generous manner. Even if we are unable to pay back the exact amount that was borrowed, we should still try our best to be as generous as possible when repaying our debt. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ demonstrated this by instructing his companions to buy an older camel and give it back as repayment for a debt owed. He said that “the best among you are those who repay their debts handsomely”, meaning that generosity and kindness should be shown when dealing with others, even when they may have been rude or demanding in their approach. We can learn from this hadith that being kind and generous towards others is an important part of being a good Muslim, especially when dealing with financial matters such as repaying debts.
