Sunan Abi Dawud 2500 (Book 15, Hadith 24) #22791
The Reward of Those on the Path of Allah

SUMMARY: Everyone's deeds will be completed upon death, except for those who are on the path of Allah, whose deeds will continue to increase until the Day of Resurrection.

Narrated Fadalah ibn Ubayd: The Prophet said: Everyone who dies will have fully complete his action, except one who is on the frontier (in Allah's path), for his deeds will be made to go on increasing till the Day of Resurrection, and he will be safe from the trial in the grave.

QUICK LESSONS:
Do good works , Stay steadfast on one's faith .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how our actions in life have consequences and rewards. It tells us that when we die, all our actions will be complete and judged by Allah. However, for those who are on the path of Allah - meaning they strive to do good deeds and follow His commands - their deeds will continue to increase until the Day of Resurrection. This means that even after death, their good works can still benefit them in this world and in the hereafter. The hadith also mentions that these people are safe from trial in the grave which is a reference to questioning by two angels after death about one's faith and beliefs. Thus this hadith encourages us to stay steadfast on our faith while doing good works so that we can reap its rewards both here and hereafter.
