Sahih al-Bukhari 2363 (Book 42, Hadith 11) #2260
Serving Animals is Rewarded by Allah

SUMMARY: A man was walking and felt thirsty, so he went down a well to drink water. He then saw a dog panting and eating mud due to thirst, so he filled his shoe with water from the well and gave it to the dog. Allah thanked him for his good deed and forgave him.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "While a man was walking he felt thirsty and went down a well and drank water from it. On coming out of it, he saw a dog panting and eating mud because of excessive thirst. The man said, 'This (dog) is suffering from the same problem as that of mine. So he (went down the well), filled his shoe with water, caught hold of it with his teeth and climbed up and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for his (good) deed and forgave him". The people asked, "O Allah's Messenger ! Is there a reward for us in serving (the) animals?" He replied, "Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about the importance of serving animals in Islam. It is narrated by Abu Huraira that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that once a man was walking when he felt thirsty, so he went down a well to drink some water. When he came out of it, he saw a dog panting and eating mud due to excessive thirst. The man filled his shoe with water from the well using his teeth, climbed up again and gave it to the dog as an act of kindness. Allah thanked him for this good deed and forgave him for all of his sins as reward for this act of kindness towards animals. This hadith teaches us that we should be kind towards animals as they are also living creatures created by Allah SWT who deserves our love and care just like humans do too! We should always remember that any good deed done will be rewarded by Allah SWT in one way or another even if it’s something small like giving some food or water to an animal in need!
